Turn it up

So these posts are becoming fewer and father between these days, but today I want to shed some light back on to the music we know and love.

To get things going take a peek at this colab between Flux Pavilion and Steve Aoki. Although its not a new song it's still pretty great, the ridiculous music video definitely reminds me of Rick and Morty to a degree. (If you don't know what that is go watch it too. Season 2 comes out July 26.)

So anyway that music video is great hey? But back to turning it up and onto something a little more live. These days, just like the past, everyone likes to turn the tunes right up, but sometimes this just gets ridiculous. Although many people refuse to believe it, there is such a thing as too loud. No one would go stand next to a jet engine without some hearing protection, but once we get a little fucked up we'll stand next to some speakers that definitely aren't doing wonders for your future hearing. So what can we do about this? Ask the Dj to turn it down? Doubt it. Stand father away? That's just not as much fun, and I like my fun. So how about we jam some stuff in our ears? We'll that might just sound terrible hey? Those yellow and pink earplugs muffle everything right out when you put them in, and that takes away form the auditory experience we are paying for. But for a few bucks we can get something quite a bit better than those little foam plugs.

Professional earplugs are what I'm talking about. They come in many different falvours from about $15 to north of $200.

But right now you need a little something to listen to if you're going to keep reading. Take a listen it GRiZ's new album:
By the way you can get this album for free, 100% legally, so what are you waiting for go get it here:

While you listen through some of those fresh funky beats read a little more about earplugs.

Personally I hate the look of having earplugs sticking out of your head when your out having a good time, so I was a harder sell on the earplug wagon. And I definitely didn't want to compromise the quality of my tunes. So I looked around and compared everything I could find out there and came down to one pair that are worth it and don't break the bank.

They are Earasers:
http://www.earasers.net/collections/musician-s-hifi-earplugs

Starter Kit

These little silicone guys come in 4 sizes (most people will be a small or medium), so they actually fit you ears, and they just push right into your ear canal so you can't even see them. There is a tiny clear plastic tab that you pull on to get them out. They are moulded to match the shape of your ear, so they are different between right and left. The left one is marked in blue and the right one is marked in red. Pretty easy to remember right?

When you push these in (this is the hardest part about using them) everything sounds the same, just a little quieter (Your voice will sound different to you too, just like any earplug. and you can still carry a conversation on with these in.) You will quickly forget you're wearing these and no one else will know you are because they are practically invisible once inserted.

Because nothing sticks out of your ear with these you can wear whatever you want or don't want on your head, hair up or down. (With earplugs that stick out you can't let things touch the sticking out end.)

Although the volume change isn't overwhelming, It's big enough to bring those rocking beats down to level that won't leave your ears ringing, And trust me, when you pull those out at the end of the night and you can hear every little detail instead of an incessant ringing, you'll realize how worth it these things are.

These guys cost about $50 and you can get them from several internet vendors that ship to Canada now. If you're wondering if these little things are worth it right now, ask your parents or grandparents how much they would pay to be able to hear better.

I've been using these for a couple years and won't go to a show without them. (Sometime I wish I had them at louder bars also.)

The only word of warning I have for these it don't drop them. They are so small they would be very easy to lose.

But back to the tunes, pretty good right? Between that sexy sax in 'The Anthem', those smooth beats in 'For The Love', the funk of the 'Funk Party', and the groove flowing through the rest. And that free aspect is nice too. GRiZ is going to be playing at Shambhala this summer, so think about getting a ticket if you don't have one yet. You won't regret it.

So smash those Earasers into your sound canals and turn it to eleven.

Pretty Lights

So since no one here has brought this guy up yet, I feel for all that is right in the world I must. The guy's Derek Vincet Smith but every body knows him as Pretty Lights. I had the opportunity to see him at Badlands last summer with a handful of great people in some wild weather conditions. (Shout out to those who were there) This man towers in at six foot nine and by himself is quite the sight, but we're not here to see who the biggest man is, we're here for the music, and Pretty Lights has got a fantastic bunch of that.

After first hearing Pretty Lights he quickly pushed his way into my favourite artists and became a staple in my collection. Seeing him perform at Badlands was quite something as well, not just a great mix of music, but also a wild light show. His set, in my opinion, was the best of the weekend and quite probably the best set I've seen of all time, so far.

Of all the tracks that Pretty Lights has put down, I have yet to come across one that I dislike. But in terms of picking favourites, there is one song that I have a particular affinity to. The longest of the 25 tracks from the album Filing Up the City Skies, off the second disc; Take The Sun Away. Give it a go below.

I just want to mention this the size of this album. It comes in over 2 hours and 37 minutes for 25 tracks; the shortest of which is 3:00 minutes and the longest, that you're listening to right now, is over 10 great minutes. That's a 6:30 average track length. How often do you see an album of this length? Also it's probably worth checking out the rest if you haven't done so yet in your life.

But I digress, back to the song that you better be listening to right now, (or you may just be one of the slowest readers ever .) This song is like an adventure, it just keeps on going and keeps on changing . It's a great song to walk somewhere to, it just makes it feel like an epic journey instead of your normal dull trudge. Now I don't want to impose on your opinions of this song too much, but you better not quit out on this track; my favourite part doesn't come in till near the end, and in the middle of the song you can definitely pick up on that Pink Floyd influence as well.

Pretty Lights has a sound that is so unique, and the diversity throughout his tracks keep it from every getting old. As well his 2013 album Color Map of the Sun is definitely worth listening to as it was nominated for the best dance/electronica album in the 2014 Grammys, and rightly so.

I'd love to get into the style and genre of Pretty Lights, but its so much easier for you to listen to than for me to describe, but I'd try as an Electronic Pink Floyd with a bit of funk then a touches of anything else on a track by track basis.

And a last bit to leave you with, early on Pretty Lights had two members, the other was Michal Menert.

Coyote Kisses - This is How You Know

It's been quite some time since I've sat down to write something here, but when I found this track I knew I had too. Grab a pair of headphones for this one though or you might miss out on the stereo effects they dumped in here.
I don't know how I would describe this track other than great. The pair, Bryce Bresnan and Joseph Sussingham, from Lakeland Florida really hit the right notes putty this together. Its not really a rave track but I also wouldn't call it a chill track. The ambient style intro is pretty nice, then as its progressives in I enjoy it as it playfully builds up the melody. Then through the rest of the track you've great some great builds, interesting vocals, and distinct bass-lines to look forward to. They keep the track nice and dynamic, nail the transitions, and leave a satisfying tail on the end. I hope you enjoy this track as much as I do.

The pair has also done a lot of work covering multiple genres so if you enjoy this you may want to check out their SoundCloud page at https://soundcloud.com/coyotekisses

MitiS - Open Window EP

Time’s just been blowing by in all this nice weather and I haven’t had the time to keep up here. But with the release of the new EP from MitiS I’ve found something that I just want to let you all know about.
This EP that MitiS just released is called “Open Window”. Its four tracks long and pretty sick. Take a listen while you read on.

So if you don’t remember, I’ve brought MitiS up before for his Alive remix. If you listen to much of his other work you’ll quickly realize that MitiS likes using the piano; probably because of his classical pianist past, and I’m down with that. He also does a great job of keeping his tracks dynamic, (you never feel like a bar is stuck on loop with his stuff). But enough of that,  I’m gonna give you a bit of a run through of what I think of this EP. (Spoiler Alert)

The EP starts out with “Open Window” featuring Anna Yvette. It’s a slower song but packs a full sound throughout. It’s got some wispy female vocals in there that are pretty nice. If you’re hoping for a massive dirty drop, this isn’t the song for you, but if a nice full melody with some exciting builds is what you’re looking for, then you just might like this.

The second track in this EP is called “The Opening” it moves from the first song into something a little more aggressive but maintains that high level of melody and it rests on the foundation of a solid beat. But the ending of the song, some might say it’s a bit of a cruel tease.

As for the third song of the EP, it’s “Shock Top” (yeah, the same name as that citrus beer that’s out there, but don’t let your feelings of the beer get in the way of this song) Although I’m not going to recommend Shock Top beer, I will recommend this song, because its coming in as my favourite for this EP. And to keep with the trend, again I’d say this song is more aggressive than the last but still melodic. For this track I’ve gotta say my favourite part is when it drops in. The build has nothing too special about it but when it drops in it’s just got that sick jump feel to it, and frankly I wish there was a bit more of that in there because it’s so good.

As for the final track it’s called Pain. It’s a good closing track, but there’s a reason this EP isn’t called ‘Pain’.  I’d say it’s not as melodic, nor as aggressive, and it’s a bit cluttered. But when you listen to this EP as a whole, it does a good job tying it up.

TLDR : Shock Top, Yeah, Sick jump feel. Open Window, nice builds and melody. The Opening, pretty dece beat. Pain, extends the EP to four tracks.
